Resume Guidelines – Words to Remove From Your Resume - “Responsible For”
Lots of us are well-known with the idea of “power verbs” on a resume. We have limitless sources for discovering & selecting power verbs, adding many sites that give lists of that kind of verbs.
How many times have you heard, “Each bullet in a resume should begin with a verb”? Dozens at least, correct?
Then why are you beginning your bullets with the phrase “Responsible for”? Responsible is not a verb, not important that how many times is views up on your resume. Also, you can be “responsible for” something & not really do it! Employers care about what you did.
Compare:
• Was responsible for presenting two sports related blogs every month for publications on website.
• Presented two sports related blogs every month for publications on website.
And compare:
• Responsible for increasing $250,000 by recruiting staff run every door campaign achieving 200,000 people
• Increased $250,000 by recruiting staff to run every door canvass achieving 200,000 people
Version b. in both cases is mighty & shorter than version a.
You may say, “But I did not only do things, I was responsible for them!” If you had managerial or supervisory responsibilities, there are verbs for that. Few of them are:
Developed
Supervised
Ensured
Managed
Monitored
Handled
If you had many important responsibilities that are significant to list on your resume, you can have two sections, one that speaks “important responsibilities” & one that speaks “Key attainments.” Then begin your bullets under those sections with verbs!
In a touch, “Held responsibility for” does begin with a verb.
Be “responsible for” the words you select on your resume. If not you might be “responsible for” attracting a recruiter or employer, but will you do well?
